Arturs Silovs: The Rising Star of Upper Deck

Arturs Silovs, a relatively unknown name to many in the NHL, has suddenly found himself in the spotlight, dazzling fans with his impressive skills both on the ice and in the world of hockey card collecting. Originally placed third in the Vancouver Canucks’ goaltending depth chart, Silovs’s fate took a sharp turn when injuries sidelined Thatcher Demko and Casey deSmith, propelling him into a prominent role in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Despite facing off against formidable opponents like the Nashville Predators, Silovs rose to the occasion, showcasing his talent with remarkable saves that caught the attention of hockey enthusiasts everywhere. In a breathtaking display of skill, Silovs made history by stopping 42 shots in a single game, a standout performance that set him apart from his peers and solidified his place as a rising star in the league.

Prior to his meteoric rise in the NHL, Silovs had already proven his prowess in both junior hockey with the Barrie Colts and on the international stage with HS Riga in Latvia. Initially overlooked by many scouting reports, Silovs caught the eye of the Vancouver Canucks, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft. His standout displays at various championships, including the World U18 Championships and the 2023 IIHF World Championships where he helped Latvia clinch a historic bronze medal, elevated him to the status of a national hero and a promising talent in the world of hockey.

The buzz surrounding Silovs has not only been limited to his stellar on-ice performances but has also spilled over into the realm of hockey card collecting. With the release of Upper Deck Series 2, collectors have been eagerly seeking out Silovs’s rookie cards, particularly the coveted Young Guns and Canvas Young Guns editions, driving up their value and demand. Recently, a Young Guns Red Outburst variant of Silovs’s card fetched an impressive $263, reflecting the growing interest in his collectibles.

Beyond the Upper Deck releases, Silovs’s presence in other card sets and the non-licensed BY cards from IIHF tournaments has further expanded his appeal, particularly in Europe where his fan base continues to grow. With his future role on the Canucks uncertain, speculations abound on whether Silovs will remain as Demko’s backup or become a valuable trade asset for the team. What is certain, however, is that Silovs’s unexpected ascent has not only secured him a key position in Vancouver’s lineup but has also established him as a highly sought-after figure in the world of hockey card collecting, capturing the hearts of fans and collectors alike.
